SPECIAL GUIDED TOUR: Aspects of life in Medieval Nicosia

The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia hosts special tours as it kicks off a rich programme of events organized on the occasion of the big temporary exhibition “Nicosia: The birth and growth of a capital. Byzantine-Medieval period”. Tours of the exhibition will take place in two successive, complementary visits.

 

 Aspects of Medieval Nicosia”,Tuesday 18.09.2018, 18:30:  The tour focuses on various themes and aspects of Byzantine and Medieval Nicosia. People, institutions and laws; Religious life and art; From life at home and in the city make up the main exhibition units weaving the historical fabric through which visitors can perceive the evolution, structures, as well as human acritivities in the city and at home. On display in the exhibition area are coins, rare books, icons, tokens of remembrance, household items and other “treasures” of the Medieval capital of Cyprus visitors can study and admire.

 

 From Lefkousia to Lefkosia - Nicosia”, Sunday 23.09.2018, 11:00: The tour presents the historical development of Nicosia as capital of Cyprus from the 10th c. down to 1570 when the city fell under the dominance of the Ottoman Turks. During the tour, visitors will have the opportunity to explore, by way of an interactive platform, 3-D models of Nicosia’s medieval monuments, to peruse historical objects of special significance, such as the renowned Music Codex of Cyprus, stone and other items of Gothic art, paintings, rare maps of the city, books, manuscripts, helmets, swords, cannonballs and much more.

 

The tours will be conducted in Greek by theMuseums Director, Dr Demetra Papanikola-Bakirtzi and Curators Dr Elena Poyiadji-Richter and Maria Patsalosavvi.
