32nd Annual Lecture in Memory of Constantine Leventis / Asia Minor: Honoring the memory
22.11.23
19.30-20.30
The A. G. Leventis Foundation and the Leventis Municipal Museum of of Nicosia are organising the 32nd Annual Lecture in memory of Constantine Leventis*, entitled ASIA MINOR: Honouring the Memory.
This year’s lecture is dedicated to the Hellenism of Asia Minor and takes place in parallel with the anniversary exhibition of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, From Asia Minor to Cyprus: Splendour – Catastrophe – Uprooting – Creation, which continues the monumental exhibition of the Benaki Museum and the Centre for Asia Minor Studies in Athens in 2022.
The speaker of the lecture is Dr. Evita Arapoglou, art historian and Curator of the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, as well as Curator of the anniversary exhibition on Asia Minor in both Athens and Nicosia. Her lecture will unfold the story behind the creation of the exhibition, which brings to life—through works of art, ecclesiastical relics, photographs and personal testimonies—the period of prosperity and cultural flourishing in Ionia and the western coast of Asia Minor, in Cappadocia and the southern provinces, in Pontus, Bithynia, Constantinople and Eastern Thrace. It will then trace the turbulent years that led to the great upheaval, the Catastrophe and the dramatic Exodus, as well as the beginning of a new life for the refugees in their new homelands, in Greece and Cyprus.
About the Speaker

She studied History and Archaeology at the University of Athens, specializing in Art History, and pursued postgraduate studies in Art History and Museum Studies at King’s College London, where she received her Master’s degree.
She has collaborated with major cultural institutions in Greece and abroad, including the Benaki Museum, the National Gallery–Alexandros Soutzos Museum, and the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron), where she curated and coordinated exhibitions and cultural programs. Her research and curatorial work focus on modern Greek art, the artistic production of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the role of visual culture in shaping Hellenic identity.
Arapoglou has published articles, exhibition catalogues, and essays on Greek art and artists, and has participated in international conferences, where she has presented papers on Greek diaspora artists, memory and identity in modern Greek art, and the reception of Antiquity in modern artistic creation. She has also been actively involved in educational initiatives and public programs that bring art history closer to wider audiences.
Her lecture at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia will focus on Asia Minor, honoring the memory of its people, history, and cultural legacy. It will examine the ways in which the memory of Asia Minor has been preserved and represented in Greek cultural consciousness, the visual arts, and collective identity, and how its enduring legacy continues to shape modern Hellenism and its place within Europe.
