Map Collection

The Map Collection of the Leventis Municipal Museum mainly comprises maps of Nicosia from the 16th to the 18th centuries that either depict or refer to the city’s Venetian walls and the siege of Nicosia by the Ottomans in 1570. Such maps were particularly widespread in Venice and may be encountered in isolarii and traveller’s accounts, but also in reference books on fortifications and books recording wars and battles of the time.

The Collection is supplemented by remarkable rare maps of Cyprus, but also of the Middle East region, in which reference is made to the city of Nicosia.

The Collection was initiated in 1989 by the donation of 9 maps by the then mayor of Nicosia, Lellos Demetriades. It has since been enriched with donations from the A. G. Leventis Foundation and the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, as well as from private citizens.
