The Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia was founded in 1986 by a group of Nicosia residents who believed in the need to create and establish a civic history museum in Nicosia. On the initiative again of Mayor Lellos Demetriades and other Nicosia residents, such as the late Giannakis Christofides, Agni Michaelides and Costakis Emilianides, the initial core of the Association of the Friends was established.

The primary aim of establishing the Association of the Friends was to help, promote and strengthen all the efforts of the Nicosia Municipality and the A. G. Leventis Foundation in organising and enriching the Museum’s Collections. From the day of its foundation until today, the Association has developed a variety of activities that contribute to the enhancement of the Museum’s Collections, to the strengthening of its educational programmes and to the promotion of the Museum’s cultural work. The Association of the Friends also manages the Museum’s Shop.

From 2018 the Association of the Friends, with a change to its statutes, was renamed as the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
