19.00-20.00
The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the A. G. Leventis Gallery are presenting a series of four lectures dedicated to the memory of Costakis Emilianides, the late Chairman of the Association, who through his actions offered so much to the Museum.
The themes of the lectures will focus on the multifaceted period of British rule in Cyprus (1878-1960).
1st Lecture / Nicosia, 1570-1960: The journey of a city from dereliction to development and growth
Through texts and testimonies of travellers, prints, maps and archival material we trace the development of Nicosia within and outside of the Venetian walls from the passage of the Ottoman Period (1570-1878) to the British Period (1878-1960), reaching the birth of the Republic of Cyprus.
We therefore travel from the gloomy years of Ottoman rule, the years of dereliction and decline, to the growth which was steadily implemented with the influx of the new British regime and we focus on the evolving image of the city: on the public buildings, such as Government House, the Hospital and the Cyprus Museum, which would later manifest as important symbols of the independent Republic of Cyprus.
A journey into time and space, this lecture is directly connected to the newly refurbished British Period Gallery of the Leventis Municipal Museum, which opened its doors to the public in January 2024.
