In the late 19th century the capital, Nicosia, gradually developed into a great trade and economic centre of the island. The most distinguished merchants at the end of the Ottoman Period were Ioannis Evangelides (1818-1897) and his sons-in-law Ioannis M. Zachariades (?-1908) and Christodoulos Severis (1834-1900).

The lecture documents the most important merchants of Nicosia in the period from 1878 to 1939, while it analyses their main economic activities.

Simultaneously, having as a main focus the case of Costas Christodoulou (1878-1972), based on his personal archive, the lecture attempts to outline the merchant’s social presence in Nicosia, as well as his philanthropic, educational and national actions.
