The CyBC File and Historical Memory: The Turkish-Cypriot Enclaves
27.04.26
19.30-20.30
The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the A. G. Leventis Gallery are presenting a series of five lectures dedicated to the memory of Lellos Demetriades (3.2.1933 – 9.4.2022), Mayor of Nicosia (1971-2001), who led the way for a united city. The themes of the lectures focus on the Museum’s temporary exhibition Sector 2: Nicosia.
Lecture 4
The fourth lecture in the series is organised in collaboration with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), as it addresses a particularly significant topic entitled: ‘The CyBC File and Historical Memory: The Turkish-Cypriot Enclaves’.
A file containing previously unpublished material, discovered in the office of the Director General of the CyBC, serves as the starting point for an in-depth study of the conditions prevailing within the Turkish-Cypriot enclaves. This primary source of information contributes to a deeper understanding of modern Cypriot history, which is often marked by grey or dark periods, conspiracies, contested issues and realities that are either deliberately or inadvertently avoided. Within this context, the lecture also examines the efforts by Turkish extremist elements to control a strategically important part of the island’s territory during the period prior to 1974.
In this research by the CyBC Director General, Thanasis Tsokos, testimonies are also drawn from communications between Turkish Cypriots and the CyBC, offering valuable perspectives for understanding the events through documented evidence and substantiated material.
