Art intervention: The Dragoman, His Wrath and the Nine Maidens

The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia presents the visual arts intervention The Dragoman, His Wrath and the Nine Maidens in the framework of a new art proposal by Maria Loizidou titled Look Under the Hood. The artwork will be on display in the Ottoman Gallery of the Museum from 28 September 2019 to 31 October 2019.
Maria Loizidou’s Look Under the Hood, which materialised in collaboration with the Lefteris Economou Cultural Foundation, takes the form of a retrospective compilation of the visual artist’s body of work. She sets out to activate 22 sites she has engaged with in the span of 35 years of her work, in order to understand her everlasting dialogue with art and the city. To achieve this, she brings into play a diversity of supporting reasons and challenges the mediums of documentation and memory. The works on display may be conjured up as references and notes for crossing routes and treading on paths that help us map our steps. If the observation of touring lies at the centre of her theme, Loizidou’s proposal endeavours to contribute to such questions as ‘What is this place?’ and ‘Where are we now?’
The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia is one of the prime sites with which Maria Loizidou has engaged in the course of her work: in 1992, when it was still newly founded, the Museum broke new ground for the city’s cultural landscape by hosting the her installation The Dragoman, His Wrath and the Nine Maidens. The proposal, based on the Historical Archive of the Museum and on the history of the city of Nicosia, belongs to the early period of Loizidou’s practice, namely the production of artworks specifically for historical sites – in which she distinguishes herself today by participating in international exhibitions and creating permanent installations in public spaces. Broadening its interest in contemporary art and having since hosted several other appealing exhibitions, the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia engages with Loizidou’s Look Under the Hood by featuring The Dragoman, His Wrath and the Nine Maidens in its new, revamped premises.
