Public Perceptions of the Green Line in Its Early Years (1964-1967) Following Its Establishment: Rejection or Gradual Acceptance?
30.03.26
19.30-20.30
The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the A. G. Leventis Gallery are presenting a series of five lectures dedicated to the memory of Lellos Demetriades (3.2.1933 – 9.4.2022), Mayor of Nicosia (1971-2001), who led the way for a united city.
The themes of the lectures focus on the Museum’s temporary exhibition Sector 2: Nicosia.
Lecture 3
The third lecture in the series, entitled ‘Public Perceptions of the Green Line in Its Early Years (1964-1967) Following Its Establishment: Rejection or Gradual Acceptance?’, examines the reactions of residents to the division of Nicosia during the early years after 1963. Additionally, it analyses how this new reality shaped attitudes, perceptions and public discourse concerning the future of the city.
Since the final days of 1963, the residents of Nicosia, and of Cyprus more broadly, have experienced life in a divided capital. How, however, did they respond
to the Green Line in the first years following its imposition? What troubled them most? Was there a prevailing sense of temporariness or, rather, an expectation
and hope for a reunified Nicosia for all its inhabitants? This lecture seeks to address these questions and to illuminate how the division of the city and its population
was perceived and negotiated in everyday life and in public opinion.
